Driver arrested in deadly hit-and-run at Athens bus stop

Driver charged with murder and more

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has made an arrest in connection to a deadly hit-and-run at a bus stop.

Officials say on August 11, around 6:13 p.m., 45-year-old Shelby Cox was struck by a vehicle while waiting on a bus in the 2000 block of Atlanta Highway. The driver then fled the scene, according to a police department news release.

“Responding officers and emergency personnel started life-saving efforts, and the victim was transported to a local hospital,” says ACCPD Public Information Officer Lt. Jody Thompson.

Cox died at the hospital as a result of her injuries.

Police identified the suspect as 58-year-old Jeffery Scott Tate of Athens. They took Tate into custody with help from the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and charged him with murder, hit-and-run, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane.

Thompson says the investigation remains ongoing.
