Now Habersham has crowned our first ever ‘King of Sweets.’ Raspas El Tigre in Cornelia won the round-robin-style competition against six other area businesses that put their best desserts to the taste test.
Raspas El Tigre’s Churro Cheesecake BOMB proved to be the bomb with voters, winning six rounds. More than 7,000 votes were cast during the five-week-long competition.
Tallulah 1882 in Tallulah Falls came in second with its Blueberry, Lemon, Rosemary Rustic Scone. The other participants were White Birch Provisions in Clayton, Brownies by Faith in Cornelia, Farmhouse Coffee in Cleveland, Clayton Cafe in Clayton, and Sweet Southern Creations in Sautee-Nacoochee
Raspas El Tigre owners Jessi and Luis Covarrubias of Cornelia say they’re delighted to win and thanked their many customers who voted for them.
“It was surprising. We didn’t expect that much support from our people. I mean, we knew we were going to do pretty good, but not every single round,” says Luis.
Jessi says they work hard to make their business a happy place for customers to visit.
“We try to always be nice to people and we try to give them what they want, so, it was nice ’cause that reflected on how we are.”
The Covarrubias’ opened Raspas El Tigre in the split-level strip mall at 215 Hodges Street seven months ago. “It’s going really good, thankfully. We believe our social media presence and responding to people on social media really made a big difference,” Luis says.
He adds, “A big thanks to all of them that supported us and showed so much love and support. It was nice.”
Omar Torres won the random drawing for a $50 gift certificate to a participating business of his choosing. He chose Raspas El Tigre.
In addition to the King of Sweets trophy, Now Habersham presented Raspas El Tigre with a month’s worth of free advertising valued at $600.
