The College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Superdome in New Orleans has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2.
The Sugar Bowl’s postponement was announced just after 2 p.m. Wednesday. The game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish was cleared to proceed just after 5 p.m. Wednesday evening. Heightened security and a heavier police presence surrounding the stadium is likely as an ongoing investigation into what’s been described as a terror attack on Bourbon Street continues.
The investigation by federal and state authorities comes after a man is said to have sped into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning. At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured, according to police.
The Sugar Bowl Committee offered condolences to the victims and their families. “The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” the committee said.
The committee said it is working with local, state, and federal agencies to keep the public safe. It will release more information as it becomes available.
