Power has been restored across Northeast Georgia after strong winds toppled trees and downed power lines Wednesday.
A majority of customers who’d been without power in Habersham and surrounding areas were back online by mid-afternoon, with a few scattered outages remaining as of 6 p.m. At the height of the outages, more than 1,800 homes and businesses were without electricity in Habersham, according to FindEnergy.com.
Winds up to 20 mph swept into the region as part of a cold front that saw a marked temperature drop. As they did, public safety officials urged caution since the ground was saturated following two days of heavy rain.
Public safety and public works personnel worked through the afternoon to clear fallen trees and debris from local roadways. Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell warned motorists, “Do not approach any downed lines or any trees or brush touching wires.”
Winds have slowed, but there is still a danger that more trees could fall due to the saturated soil. Always treat downed power lines as if they are live, and report any road hazards to your local 911 dispatch center.
