Storm shuts down county roads, classes at TFS

Habersham County officials spent part of the day Friday assessing the damage caused by severe weather. Overnight storms caused flooding and power outages across the county.

What’s being described as a “wind event” toppled trees and power lines near Tallulah Gorge. Tallulah Falls School called off classes Friday because of power outages. Several homes were damaged by the storm and a number of roads in the county are still impassable.

County crews set up detours around Shoal Creek Road and Odis Barron Road after the storm washed out sections of both. The roads are expected to remain closed until they can be repaired.

Shoal Creek Road was also temporarily closed due to damage last October following Hurricane Delta.

Friday afternoon, utility crews were still working to clear up electrical outages in Georgia. Some 6,000 customers remained without power across the state, according to the outage tracking site poweroutage.us. A few hundred of those outages were in Northeast Georgia.

The severe weather was part of a violent system that swept through the South Thursday, killing at least five people in Alabama.
