UPDATE (Jan. 20 @ 8 a.m.) — Habersham County road crews and public safety officials have spent this week clearing roads of snow and ice and chopping up downed trees that blocked them. Sunshine and warmer temperatures Wednesday helped clear much of the remaining snowmelt and ice that made travel hazardous.
Road conditions in the county have improved, but drivers should still be cautious on back roads, particularly in areas that are shaded.
Currently, the only road in Habersham County closed to traffic is Serenity Hills. The following roads may have dangerous conditions, but are passable:
- River Run Trail
- Savannah Ridge
- Woodfield Way
Habersham County has had about 80 personnel working county-wide throughout this week to provide emergency public works services, according to county public information officer Carolyn Gibson. She says of those personnel 25 are with the road department and 11 are contracted employees. The county had to bring in those contracted employees due to staff shortages.
Habersham County Public Works Director Jerry Baggett says the road department worked through the day and well into the night Wednesday to make sure roads are safe for school buses as they begin their routes today.
“All other bus routes are open,” Baggett says. “I spoke with Stephanie Walker and she was very appreciative. The guys did a great job today clearing the trees on Oakey Mountain Road, Watts Mill Road Raper Mountain Road so buses could run.”
Habersham County Schools are operating on a 2-hour delay today to allow time for any overnight icing to thaw.
