Stoney’s Family Restaurant in Clarkesville to close

The restaurant has been in business for nearly 60 years

It’s been the ‘go to’ breakfast and lunch spot for many Habersham Countians and visitors for over half a century. On Tuesday, Stoney’s Family Restaurant announced it is closing.

The owner made the announcement on the Clarkesville restaurant’s social media page Tuesday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of Stoney’s Family Restaurant. We want to thank all our wonderful customers for supporting us over these past 58 years. What began as a little walk-up restaurant grew into a place that has welcomed hundreds of thousands of customers. We are extremely humbled that so many embraced our restaurant and that we were able to succeed as long as we have. For a small, family restaurant to survive 58 years is an accomplishment of which we can all be proud; and we could not have done it without all of you,” the post says.

The move was prompted by the Georgia Department of Transportation’s decision to install a roundabout at the intersection where Stoney’s Restaurant is located.

“It’s so hard to see change in our little community, but even harder when it’s something that is not wanted. But with growth, must come change, and our little town is growing. The traffic has become too much for our intersection to handle and the State of Georgia sees that the only way to handle the influx is with the construction of a roundabout. Do we agree with Georgia DOT’s decision?! Not necessarily. What we do agree with is making sure that people are safe, so if that is what it takes, then it is a sacrifice that we must make, no matter how hard it is.”

The restaurant concluded the post saying, “Thank you all for being the best customers and the best community we could have ever asked for.
