On Saturday, February 8, the Stephens County Middle School (SCMS) Robotics team showcased their talents at the Regional FIRST LEGO League Challenge Championship, competing against 20 teams from seven states. The event, held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, brought together some of the brightest young minds in robotics, and the SCMS team more than held their own.

The team participated in a rigorous interview process that tested their abilities in Innovative Projects, Robot Design, and Core Values. During the interview, students had the opportunity to present their projects and then answer specific questions from a panel of expert judges. Their thorough preparation and impressive performance in these areas earned them high praise.

This award is reserved for teams with significant promise, demonstrating innovative thinking and teamwork. Additionally, the team was honored with the prestigious “Breakthrough Award.” This award is given to teams that have shown remarkable progress in student confidence and capability, particularly in one or more of the core areas of the FIRST LEGO League.

The SCMS Robotics team members include Braeson Bartmas, Scotty Herring, Silas Johns, Olen Johnson, Bruin LaFevers, Haiden Parker, Bernie Picasso, Myles Segers, Fin Stith, and David Washburn. Their dedication and teamwork were evident in every aspect of the competition, and their performance impressed both judges and spectators alike.

The team was sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance and Country Financial, whose support made their participation possible. Head Coach Erica Martin and Assistant Coach Karrie Perrin helped students to thrive through their guidance and encouragement.
