A list of road improvements, paid for through a state grant, is set to come to Stephens County.

During a regular meeting Tuesday, April 8, the Stephens County Commission approved just over $645,000 in LMIG (or Local Maintenance Improvement Grant) funding to repave and repair roads throughout the county. There is no match required from the county for approval of the funding, though, with an overall project cost of about $768,000, there is an already-budgeted match of $122,000 in SPLOST funds.

Stephens County receives around $3.9 million a year from net SPLOST VII revenues after payout to the other municipalities, according to county officials.

“We will be saving about $645,000 to do this roadwork in house,” Stephens County Administrator Christian Hamilton said.

According to Hamilton, the roads expected to see improvements include: Gooseway Road, N. Yow Mill Road, Old Carnes Creek Road, Waters Edge Court, Pulliam Road, Suttles Road, James Thomas Road, Lingerfelt Lane, Hayes Road and Echo Valley Road.

“This is something we’re very excited about,” Hamilton said. “This is the second year in a row that the state of Georgia is offering additional supplemental funding for roadwork…our project will involve patching, leveling and resurfacing on 10 county roads for a total of 3.54 miles.”
