State troopers say a driver was following too closely when he rear-ended an SUV Thursday afternoon near Clarkesville.

The rear-end wreck occurred around 6 p.m. on August 17 at the intersection of GA 197 and Beaver Dam Road.

According to the Georgia State Patrol’s preliminary report, Paul Wood, 72, of Demorest, was driving a GMC Terrain north on Highway 197 when he stopped to turn left onto Beaver Dam Road. Anthony Romano, 77, of Clarkesville, was driving behind Wood in a Subaru Outback.

Romano told the investigating officer he did not see the vehicle stopping in front of him until he was too close to avoid impact.

The Subaru rear-ended the GMC, causing disabling damage to both vehicles.

There was a passenger in Wood’s vehicle. No one was injured, according to Habersham County Public Information Officer Rob Moore.

An engine from the Clarkesville Fire Department responded due to minor leakage. The wreck blocked one lane of the highway for about 30 minutes.

The state trooper issued Romano a warning for following too closely.
