Tim Stamey has been elected Habersham County’s newest commissioner. Unofficial election results show Stamey defeated Darrin Johnston by a 308-vote margin in Tuesday’s runoff.
Stamey received 1237 votes (57.11%) to Johnston’s 929 votes ( 42.89%).
The two were forced into the runoff after neither won 50% of the vote in a crowded five-person race in November. All of the candidates were Republicans. No Democrats ran for the seat.
Stamey succeeds former District 5 Habersham County Commissioner Ed Nichols who resigned in August.
The December 3 runoff was marked by low voter turnout. Just over 8%, or 2,169 of Habersham County’s 26,374 active registered voters, cast ballots during early and election day voting.
