Citizens of Habersham are now enjoying a little safer life and one that is more convenient after the completion of two community SPLOST projects.
The new Cornelia Fire Station No. 2 recently went into service in the Habersham Village Shopping Center on Historic 441, in what many residents call, “Midway.”
The property, a former bank building, was purchased for $390,000 with SPLOST funds last year, and recently renovated into Fire Station No. 2 for an additional $350,000. The new fire station is staffed 24 hours a day, with three crews, two fire trucks and an emergency vehicle. The addition of the facility and crews will make answering Cornelia emergency calls more quickly in the Hwy 365/441 interchange.
In addition, a new expanded parking lot at the Cornelia Community House complex will provide an additional 120 parking spaces, as well as additional Handicapped parking spots.
The property on which the new parking facility was built, was purchased last year for $75,000, and was funded with SPLOST tax dollars, as well as the cost of the parking lot, lighting, sidewalks, signage and landscaping.
Only thirty spaces were available within the original parking lot adjacent to the Community House. With the expansion, there are now eight dedicated Handicapped spaces on the older, original lot. While the new parking area does not contain protected Handicapped spaces, a sidewalk connecting the lot to the entrance of the Community House is flat, without steps, along the road, and could be accessed by wheel chairs, and those who do not desire to climb steps at the parking lot, as well.
New street lighting, consistent with the stone and timber W.P.A. Community House, provides ample parking lot illumination and landscape has recently been completed. The cost of the new parking facilities was $340,000, all funded with SPLOST dollars.
