Speak Happy

Phil Robinson coined it simply, “Happy, happy, happy.”

Then there is one of my favorite songs by Pharrell Williams from the movie Despicable Me 2 when Gru falls in ‘love with Lucy, the secret agent.

Because I’m Happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

And the line given when someone you love is doing something you really don’t approve of but you have no authority to stop them, “I’m happy that you are happy.”

We speak “happy,” but are we happy?

My grandmother used to say, “Happy is as happy does…” In reality, she was right. Much of life isn’t about being happy – it is about choosing to be happy.

My friend recently remarked as she sat in the chair opposite my desk, “Geez, I just want to be happy.”

And don’t we all? I often laugh because happiness is one of our inalienable rights? Well, the pursuit of it is.

So how do we pursue “Happiness”

  1. See yourself happy – Literally, visualize yourself in a happy state. Sounds a bit out there – but it works.
  2. Release the negativity in your life – that means people too. Stop talking negative; stop thinking negative; stop dwelling in negativity.
  3. Kindness to others mends wounds – Being kind to others has medicinal purposes within our heart. Kindness can turn a rough day into something great.
  4. Don’t replay sad and hurtful events. Stay away from those who continue to hurt you. Some people need the gift of goodbye in your life. Let them go.
  5. Protect your spirit – Experience God and allow Him to be front and center in your life.
  6. Be healthy – Do your part to make your body feel good about itself.
  7. Live in peace – As much as it has to do with you, be peaceful with the people around you. Don’t stir up trouble.
  8. Spend time in nature – Birds, flowers, trees, rivers, mountains – it’s all there for us to enjoy for a reason. God made life beautiful. Take hold of it.
  9. Believe in your miracle – God performs them everyday. Believe in yours.
  10. Let go – The weight of life can feel like anchors as we drag around the past. LET IT GO! MOVE ON!

Pursue your happy – speak it into your own life and the lives of others. Happiness won’t find you; only you can choose to find it.
