A screengrab pulled from a cellphone video sent to Now Habersham shows police officers walking toward a man with their guns drawn. Two officers fired on the man when he refused to obey their verbal commands, the GBI says. The man, later identified as Adam English of Oakwood, died as a result of the shooting.
An Oakwood man was fatally shot around 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 by police near the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Officers responded to the scene after a caller reported to 911 that a man was waving a gun and walking in the area of 1075 Jesse Jewell Parkway at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Surgical Associates, according to the GBI.
Gainesville officers responded to the scene and located the suspect who was later identified as 21-year-old Adam Paul English.
Cellphone video sent to Now Habersham shows five police officers advancing toward English with their guns drawn. Moments later, five shots ring out and English drops to the ground.
“English was given verbal commands to drop weapon, but he did not comply with them,” says GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles. Two Gainesville officers shot English multiple times. Officers rendered aid and English was transported to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The GBI says a gun was located at the scene.

No officers were injured. The Gainesville Police Department initially reported that two officers were injured and taken to the hospital. GPD later clarified that statement saying, “Our officers are being evaluated but do not have any apparent injuries.”
The Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Gainesville campus was on a brief lockdown and the shooting temporarily shut down Summit Drive near Jesse Jewell Parkway.
The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on English. Miles says the bureau will continue its independent investigation of the shooting. Once it’s complete, the findings will be turned over to the Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
This is the 61st officer-involved shooting investigation that the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2019.
