I have a business idea for someone who is smart enough to make it happen. Katherine (and many others I’ve seen) needs an affordable shoe to fit her swollen feet. They need to be extra, extra wide, and easy to put on. A slide would be ideal since she cannot reach her feet to tie laces. However, it needs to be a slide that will stay on her foot.
That doesn’t seem much to ask for, does it? We might could find a pair in the big/tall men’s section but they are so expensive! I am constantly amazed at how much things cost for the “regular” folks; for those with extra girth, they cost even more.
I take shoes for granted. At least, I used to. Now, every time I put on a pair of shoes, I’m grateful. It’s easy for me to find shoes that fit and are comfortable that I can put on all by myself. Not all of us have it so easy.
And, while we’re thinking of feet, there’s also the matter of socks. Again, most socks are made for smallish, non-swollen feet. Even if I can find socks that are long enough, which is not much of a problem, they won’t go around her feet. Another business idea!
Our world isn’t made for large people. I’m pretty big myself and find it tricky to sit in airplane seats or seats at the doctor’s office, especially if someone is seated right next to me. How much more difficult is it for extra-large people!
Thankfully, Katherine has a wheelchair to sit in at doctor’s offices and she’s not doing much flying on airplanes right now. I am much more aware of the challenges faces by people of size. It’s tough.
Meanwhile, if anyone out there has any solutions, please contact me at [email protected]. I’d love to know how you’re handling it.
