The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to be on alert following a report of a man impersonating an officer who stopped someone and tried to get them into his car.
UPDATE: Sketch released of man suspected of impersonating police officer
A notice posted to the HCSO Facebook page says a citizen advised the sheriff’s office that a man driving a black Ford Crown Victoria with flashing red lights pulled them over and asked for their driver’s license. The “officer” then went back to his car and returned, telling the motorist their driver’s license was suspended and they were “going to have to go with him.”
Uneasy feeling
According to the post, “The citizen felt that something was wrong and said that they were going to call their parents to come get the car and asked him to call for another officer. It was at that time the male subject told the citizen that it was their lucky day because he had gotten a call and had to leave.”
The subject impersonating the officer is described as a white male in his mid- to late 30’s with short curly hair, approximately 5′ 6″ to 5′ 7″ tall, weighing 200 to 215 pounds.
Unsure? Here’s what you do
The alert points out that Habersham County deputies have blue and white flashing lights, not red lights, on the front of their patrol vehicles. It also advises motorists on how to protect themselves on the road, stating, “If at any time you feel uncomfortable about a vehicle that is pulling you over, please turn on your emergency flashers and get to a safe location such as a store parking lot.”
Also, feel free to contact the Habersham County E-911 Dispatch at 911 or 706-778-3911 to ask if they have an officer pulling over your vehicle. “All of our traffic stops are called in to our dispatch center and are logged with them,” the post reads. “Also all of our patrol vehicles are equipped with video and audio recording.”
If you experience a similar encounter with someone you believe is impersonating an officer, contact local authorities immediately.
