Sheriff warns of home repair scammers

Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell urges residents to be wary of workers who show up at their homes unsolicited.

“People should be wary of people who show up at their house wanting to work on the roof, driveway, or other parts of their property – especially if they don’t know the company and haven’t requested work,” Terrell said.

Often, potential scammers ask for money upfront, promise work at less than market value, and then either disappear with that money or demand an additional payment to complete the work.

Sheriff Terrell said there has been at least one such instance reported in the area this week.

Representatives of a reputable company will not mind waiting for a deputy or police officer to arrive to meet with them and verify their identity.

If someone shows up at a home unsolicited to perform work and there is a doubt as to their legitimacy, residents can call Habersham County E-911 Dispatch at (706) 778-3911 and request an officer to meet with them and the potential laborers.
