Athens-Clarke County police have arrested a second suspect in connection to the weekend shooting death of a 3-year-old child.

On March 13, police took 16-year-old Jayden Brown of Athens into custody. Investigators are still searching for two other suspects wanted for the murder of Kyron Zarco.

Zarco and his 9-year-old brother were shot on March 8 when bullets flew into their home at the Hallmark Mobile Home Park on Spring Valley Road in Athens. Police believe the shooting was gang-related.

Authorities arrested 17-year-old Julian Cubillos of Lawrenceville within hours of the shooting. At the time, police also identified 18-year-old Dakious Echols of Athens as a suspect. Since then, they have obtained arrest warrants for 22-year-old Desmontrez Mathis of Athens, as well, saying further investigation revealed he was also involved.

All four suspects are charged with malice murder, felony murder, four counts each of aggravated assault, and violating the state’s street gang act.

According to Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) Public Information Officer Lt. Jody Thompson, the investigation is still active and ongoing.

ACCPD asks for the public’s help finding Echols and Mathis. If you know where they may be, please contact Detective Johnson at 762-400-7060 or email paul.johnson@accgovcom.
