Second confirmed rabies case reported in White County

(Cleveland)- White County has reported its second confirmed case of rabies for 2020. White County Environmental Health Manager Sean Sullivan says two dogs recently had contact with a rabid raccoon in the Stovall Road area of the county.

The raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur for testing. The Environmental Health office was advised Wednesday that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

According to Sullivan, positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located. If you live in this area and have concerns about rabid animal exposure, please contact White County Environmental Health at 706-348-7698 during normal business hours.

Sullivan advised that both the dogs exposed were current on their rabies vaccination so a 45-day observational quarantine is required.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domesticated pets for rabies.
