Body of missing boater found in Lake Hartwell

Searchers have found the body of a man who drowned in Lake Hartwell while camping with his son.

“Just before noon on Wednesday, Georgia Game Wardens located the victim with sonar equipment. Then, Hart County utilized their remote-operated vehicle to guide an Elbert County diver to the body. The recovery was made at 12:22 p.m.,” says Mark McKinnon of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

McKinnon identified the victim as David Matthew Crowe of Hartwell.

Authorities had been searching for Crowe since Tuesday, October 10, when his son called 911. The two were camping at Payne’s Creek Campground when their boat was blown off the beach. As the 54-year-old father tried to recover it, he began struggling in the water and went under.

The search continued into the night Tuesday and resumed early Wednesday. In addition to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Elbert County Dive Team, emergency personnel from multiple agencies in Hart County assisted in the search.
