Don’t be fooled and don’t give out personal information over the phone. That’s the advice Habersham EMC is giving its customers in light of a new phone scam that’s making the rounds.
The local cooperative says some members have received calls stating in Spanish that their power will be disconnected unless they make a payment through them or by calling a number provided.
Similar scams have targeted English-speaking members in the past.
If you get a phone call like this, immediately hang up the phone and call local law enforcement. Do not give out any personal information, HEMC officials urge.
If HEMC members have questions regarding their accounts, customer service representatives can be reached at 706-754-2114, 706-865-4362 or 800-640-6812.
