The Sandlot 10U baseball team capped an incredible season with a runner-up finish in the USSSA Global Baseball World Series, played in Orange Beach, AL.
The Sandlot organization began last year with a 9U team, which now is the 10U group. Sandlot is now comprised of 8U, 9U and 10U baseball teams and a pair of 10U softball teams, as well as a pair of 12U softball teams. The Sandlot league is out of the North Hall area, but the players come from Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Banks, Commerce, Franklin, Stephens and more.
The 10U Sandlot team played in a number of USSSA tournaments, including the state tournament in which they won in LaGrange. The boys also played in Pigeon Forge at the Cal Ripken Experience.
The 12U Sandlot softball squad is currently scheduled to play one more time in Toccoa in the GSA State Tournament after placing second in the USSSA State B Class.
Sandlot baseball plays through the month of June, while the softball teams play through July. Tryouts take place in July for next year’s teams, with baseball tryouts set for July 24. Once the teams are formed, most will play in a fall tournament or two in order to see how well the kids play together.
The season is in full swing come February after the kids wrap up winter sports. More Sandlot teams will likely be added for the 2016-17 season.
