Clarkesville Elementary School stepped up its security Friday as law enforcement searched for a home invasion suspect several miles away.

A school resource officer was stationed outside the school. And students and staff were instructed to remain inside as the search unfolded.

Habersham County School Public Safety Director Murray Kogod responded to Clarkesville Elementary School and remained on school grounds until students were dismissed, says Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper.

The suspect was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. in a bathroom at a convenience store about two miles west of the school.

“At no time was there any threat or potential of threat to students, faculty or staff,” says Habersham County School Superintendent Matthew Cooper. “This action was taken as an extra step in assuring the highest level of safety is always exercised when it comes to keeping our schools safe.”

Friday was the first day of school for Habersham County students.
