R. Herman Black

 

R. Herman Black, age 88 of Demorest, Georgia passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

Born in Habersham County, Georgia on March 08, 1927, he was a son of the late Luther L. and Veatrice McAllister Black. Mr. Black was a Piedmont College graduate and a United States Army Veteran who proudly served his country during WWII. He was retired from Ethicon in Cornelia with 38 years of service, where he served as an industrial engineer, office manager, and accounting supervisor.

Mr. Black was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for adults and youth, worked with boys in Royal Ambassadors, served on various church committees and assisted with local church benevolence. He also worked with the local Boy Scout troop for many years. Mr. Black was an active member of the Habersham Retired Educators Association and served in different capacities of leadership. He was a man of integrity, highly respected by friends and family. He had a contagious smile regardless of his circumstances and was at peace with God and his fellow man.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Tarris “Dood” Irvin; Mary Lou & Haskel Dalton; sister-in-law, Bernice Graves Black; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nell Power and Arvel W. Allen; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Thelma & Hugh Chase and Jean & Carlos Nations; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arvel C. “Bud” & Helen Dixon Allen, Frank & Pearl Holcomb Allen; brothers-in-law, Paul J. Allen, Charles Herbert Allen, and Douglas Allen.

Surviving are wife of 64 years, Edna Allen Black of Demorest; son, Joel D. Black of Sandy Springs; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly & Tom Lammers of Sautee; grandson, Zachary T. Lammers of Kennesaw; brother, Robert L. Black of Salt Lake City; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Yvonne & Charles “Bunky” Lindsay of Clarkesville and Annette & N.U. Turpen of Cleveland; sisters-in-law Janie Allen and Janett Allen both of Demorest; a special friend and neighbor, Cindy Hogsed; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 03, 2015 from the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral home with the Rev. Tommy Stowe officiating. A private family interment will be held following the service.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
