Preston Barrett, of Clarkesville, was driving a Mazda CX-5 north on Chase Road negotiating a curve. According to the Georgia State Patrol report, Barrett was traveling too fast for conditions and ran off the road. The undercarriage of the car struck a culvert then hit an embankment. The car overturned on the driver’s side into a ditch.

The crash happened around 9 p.m. Friday, March 25, and shut down Chase Road near McAllister Road for more than an hour.

The call was dispatched as a rollover wreck with possible entrapment. There were also reports the vehicle was on fire. When first responders arrived, Barrett, who is a student at Habersham Central High School, was already safely outside the vehicle.

This is the second rollover wreck this week in Habersham involving a local high school student.

On Wednesday, March 23, another HCHS student was seriously injured in a wreck when his pickup truck ran off the road and overturned on J Warren Road in Cornelia.
