Rockdale County students returned to class Monday after the county lifted a shelter-in-place advisory following the fire at the BioLab chemical plant. The fire released toxic fumes in and around Conyers. Officials say all of the chemical products have now been removed from the site.
Because of the fire and the long-lasting plume of smoke, 17,000 residents were initially evacuated, and thousands were under nightly shelter-in-place orders. Rockdale school buildings closed for two weeks, and many county and state leaders have called for criminal investigations and additional regulations.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, will remain on-site. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division will continue to monitor the cleanup.
Students attended school virtually while the plant fire site was cleaned up.
