‘Revien Trio’ plans Piedmont concert Jan. 15

Revien, a contemporary chamber ensemble, is one of the groups performing for the Cannon Classical Music Series at Sautee Nacoochee Cultural Center.

Demorest, GA – “Revien” means “to return” and that is what two members of the Revien Trio will do when they perform in an upcoming concert at Piedmont College. For members Phil Snyder and Kyle Dawkins, the concert will be a homecoming of sorts as both have taught music at Piedmont.

The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Chapel at the college’s Demorest campus. Admission is free and everyone is invited. The Chapel is located at 992 Central Avenue, Demorest.

While the Revien Trio is a contemporary chamber ensemble, all three members are also members of the acclaimed Georgia Guitar Quartet. In the Trio, Snyder performs on cello, while Dawkins and Brian Smith both play guitar and electronics. All three are graduates of the University of Georgia School of Music, and the trio embraces the classical repertoire while drawing energy from rock and pop music as well.

Playing in a collection of Athens bands throughout their 17 years together, the trio is equally at home in rock and chamber music lineups, and creates a compelling program for audiences, incorporating modern tech and prepared enhancements on their instruments—you might hear guitars and cello used as percussion, or guitar strings fitted with found objects to sound more like a sitar or an Indonesian gamelan, for instance.

The trio is regularly featured on NPR’s “Performance Today” with their live rendition of Grizzly Bear’s “Foreground” remaining an audience favorite. As accomplished composers, the members also have written a number works that are incorporated into their programs. A forthcoming February 2015 album consists of all original compositions by the members.
