It wasn’t high winds or ice, but the rain drenching the county that has caused several power outages in Habersham County. Around 2:30pm a large, very old tree took out the power lines at Habersham Mills. Approximately 18 homes are affected by the outage. Brent Edwards of Georgia Power reports that crews are out in the County addressing the outages. He cautioned people to remain in their cars and not to cross where there are lines down in the road. HEMC is also reporting power outages in the southern part of the county into White county near Jenny’s creek. There approximately 48 homes are affected.
Crews have been working throughout the county trimming trees and branches that over hang power lines or are in danger of falling on power lines. Power companies routinely work proactively this time of year in the hopes of reducing the number of outages from ice, snow or damaged trees bringing lines down. Heavy rain can soak the ground allowing for trees with weak or damaged roots to fall over.
As always, remember to thank your linemen from Georgia Power and HEMC. They are the unsung heros who brave all kinds of weather to repair the lines and keep us warm and cozy in our homes.
