Despite enduring a difficult season, the Raiders are likely learning from this experience and will come out better on the other side.
It’s been awhile since the Habersham Central Raiders have won a game, dating back to March 1, a 3-1 victory over Chestatee. In fact, both of their wins have come against the War Eagles.
As is sometimes the case, a team’s record is not always indicative of how good they are. Although the Raiders have endured tough times since joining class AAAAAA, next year should show just how much they’ve actually improved. The Raiders are currently 2-16 on the 2016 season.
Over the past four seasons, Habersham has won 21 games and dropped approximately 75, according to MaxPreps. Being in one of the toughest regions in the state’s highest classification certainly doesn’t help. Or does it?
The Raiders have fared better than the record indicates, dropping three others by just a few runs. Sometimes the offense has been up when the pitching and defense was not, as was evident in the 16-11 loss at North Forsyth. Other times, the pitching and defense has been superb, while the offense was not. Such was the case 4-3 loss at West Hall to begin the season.
What we’ve seen is that as the Raiders endure this difficult stretch, they will eventually grow and learn from it. Soon there will be more games in which the offense and pitching are firing on all cylinders, like when beating Chestatee 10-1 on February 26.
Coach Chris Akridge and the Raiders will have a new region in 2017, and one that is more favorable in terms of travel and school size. Just as we’ve seen with other local schools across other sports, the tough times make the good times even better. And Habersham’s good times may not be too far away!
With four games remaining, the Raiders should begin to turn a corner when taking on South Forsyth in a pair and Centennial in a pair to close the season.
