Georgia GOP delegates booed Gov. Brian Kemp and censured Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger during their state convention Saturday at Jekyll Island.
The reaction follows both Kemp and Raffensperger’s refusal to help Donald Trump overturn the election results after his loss to President Joe Biden.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kemp was greeted with boos so loud as he spoke at the convention that it was difficult to hear his speech from the press area for about 30 seconds. Kemp’s supporters tried to drown out the taunts, and he pleaded for party harmony heading into the 2022 elections, the Associated Press reports.
While Kemp dodged being avoided a formal vote of disapproval, Raffensperger was officially censured Saturday due to “dereliction of his constitutional duty,” according to the newspaper.
A copy of the resolution obtained by the AJC calls on Kemp and all elected officials to “repair the damage that has been done and commit themselves to securing Georgia’s elections.”
Raffensperger, like Kemp, is seeking re-election, but he did not attend this weekend’s convention.
The animosity toward Kemp and Raffensperger mirrors the hostility faced by other GOP leaders who have spoken out against the former President.
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who voted to impeach Trump, was booed by GOP delegates last month at his state’s party convention. And House Republicans ousted Wisconsin Rep. Liz Cheney from leadership after rejecting Trump’s unproven
claims that he won the 2020 presidential election.
