Rabun’s Gunner Stockton named All-American

Will Gunner Stockton be the best of all time in Georgia? He’s well on his way…

The 2018 season concluded quite a few weeks ago, but Rabun County freshman quarterback Gunner Stockton continues to roll in the awards, and this time he garners national attention after being named on the 2018 MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team.

These are the best players in the Class of 2022 in the country. No surprise for anyone who has been aware of the hype surrounding Stockton, who was recently named BLITZ Player of the Year and GACA Class 2A All-State.

Stockton is ranked the top QB in the country in the Class of 2022, and proved why in 2018. As a freshman, Stockton completed 190-of-291 passes, good for 65%. He passed for 2,917 yards and 34 TD against 6 interceptions, and added 709 rushing yards and 17 more TDs. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry.

Throughout the season, Stockton led the Wildcats to a fifth consecutive region championship, as Rabun went 9-1 in the regular season and finished with an 11-2 season that culminated with a fourth straight quarterfinals game.

Stockton’s 3,626 total yards and 51 total scores came in a year that saw him only four times play an entire game. Most often he was out by the third quarter, and wasn’t even needed to run the ball but four times during a two-game stretch in the regular season.

We’ve done it before, but worth reminding you of how Stockton’s freshman season stacks up to the likes of perhaps Georgia’s all-time best QBs in Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, and Jake Fromm, as well as former Rabun great Bailey Fisher.

His 34 passing scores bests Watson (17), Lawrence (26), Fromm (8), and Fisher (3) in their respective freshman seasons.

Among the other players named to the MaxPreps first-team freshman offense All-American team includes two others from Georgia, another QB Chad Mascoe, Jr. from Thomasville and Jack Nickel (TE) from Milton.
