The Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School is in the final phase of the restoration and renovation of historic Hodgson Hall.

On Friday, June 14, the iconic cupola was reset to its original placement atop the historic academic building which faces Highway 441.

Golden cupola

School officials said Hodgson Hall’s golden cupola was rebuilt by Campbellsville Industries of Kentucky, also known nationally as “the steeple people.” Rabun Gap partnered with Carroll Daniel Construction of Gainesville, GA to bring a giant crane to the front hill.

It took approximately four hours from start to finish with the crane executing three lifts: the architectural base, the golden dome, and the finial topper. The golden cupola is back where it belongs once again greeting passersby.

Head of School, Jeff Miles said everyone is thrilled to have the cupola return to its place on top of Hodgson Hall.

“This cherished structure holds deep historical and symbolic significance for our school. We are blessed that it will continue for generations to come,” he added.

Hodgson Hall was built in 1927 and is at the heart of the campus and home to the academic program of the Upper School. Donors for the project included alumni, parents, grandparents, foundations, friends, and trustees.

Miles said there were over 400 donors who all came together to support the renovation and restoration of this historic building. The Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School indicated in a press release that it was a $10 million fundraising campaign.

Renovation of the Hodgson Hall

The project included upgrading classrooms, adding new collaboration spaces for faculty and students, and enhancing technologies for instruction and safety. An outdoor terrace was added facing the mountains.

There was a soft opening of the building in April, but in September there will be a campus-wide rededication and blessing ceremony for Hodgson Hall.

Miles extended his gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the renovation and restoration campaign. “We can’t wait to welcome students back to the newly completed Hodgson Hall in August,” Miles expressed.
