The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office will hold two Situational Awareness classes on Saturday March 16. The two free classes are in response to the recent events that occurred in Athens, GA that resulted in the murder of UGA nursing student Laken Riley.
Situational awareness is the ability to recognize and understand a situation or environment and identify possible threats.
According to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, the classes are focused on juniors and seniors in high school and college students. However, Rabun County Sheriff Department Investigator Kevin Angell states that the classes are open to “anyone that feels that they can benefit from this type of information are more than welcome to come.”.
Each class will be about an hour long. According to Angell, the class will go through some of the pitfalls of not being situationally aware. He explains that as part of the class there will be five short videos that students will watch related to situational awareness. The class will also have different scenarios that will be open to group discussion.
For more information and to reserve a seat for one of the classes, contact Kevin Angell at [email protected]. The first class will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the second class will begin at 11:00 a.m. The classes will take place at the Sheriff’s Office at 56 Boen Creek Road in Tiger, GA.
The classes are free to the public. You do not have to be a resident of Rabun County to attend.
