The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office sought to assure the public there was no threat to county schools after rumors circulated of a potential shooting Monday morning. Authorities stressed that no school has been targeted or threatened.

When school resources officers learned of the rumors Monday, Feb. 3, they immediately launched an investigation. During the investigation, police determined that over the weekend “two students received a text message from an unknown number stating, simply, that someone was going to be shot.”

The message did not specify any individual or mention a school shooting, according to authorities. When students arrived on campus Monday, the text message was shared with others, leading to rumors of a potential threat at the school.

“We want to reassure everyone that there is no threat to Rabun County Elementary or any of the schools on campus,” a release from the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office states. “All students are safe, and school activities are continuing as planned. The safety of our students and staff are top priority. Please encourage your students to continue to share safety concerns with you and/or school personnel. Thank you for the trust you place in us to keep our schools safe.”
