Rabun County Roads Closed Due to Flooding

Three Rabun County roads are closed today due to flooding caused by heavy rains that forced the opening of flood gates on Mathis Dam on Lake Rabun.

Mathis Dam Road, Shady Lane and Joy Bridge are closed to traffic. The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office advises, “If you have family in this area please check on them and have them move to a safe area.”

The Rabun County Emergency Management Authority warned of a possible rise in water levels last night when the first flood gate was opened around 6 p.m. By 7:45 a.m. Tuesday four flood gates were opened and the RCSO warned of the possibility that more “will open soon.”

If you live in the area of Mathis Dam, or have to travel in the area of Shady Lane in South Rabun County, you are asked to use an alternate route.

If you experience an emergency concerning the opening of the Mathis Dam flood gates, dial 9-1-1 and notify the proper authorities.

More rain is expected tonight on into Wednesday so be sure to stay weather aware especially if you live near bodies of water that might quickly rise.
