March 11 is a huge day for Rabun County girls basketball, as the Lady Wildcats take the court against Laney for the GHSA Class 2A State Championship at Georgia Tech.
Throughout the season, it was clear that coach DeeDee Dillard’s Lady Cats were as good as ever. What became clear as the season rolled on was that this was a special group. After a 2-1 start to the year, a simple November 29 60-47 win over Union County was the start of an 18-game win streak, snapped by Banks County [who had lost to Rabun in OT during the streak] on January 27.
Rather than be hampered by that loss, the girls have simply started a new winning streak of nine games after a blowout win (65-37) in the Final Four over Bleckley County.
While that was cause for celebration, the only thing standing in the way of the state title another Lady Wildcats team – Laney. Laney is 30-1 on the year and currently riding a 29-game win streak of its own.
This should be one for the ages! The Lady Cats and Lady Cats tip off at 2 p.m. at Georgia Tech on Saturday.
