Two Rabun County brothers are charged with murder in the motor vehicle death of a teenager.
22-year-old Jesse Reeves Smith and 23-year-old James Cody Smith of Lakemont were arrested Thursday. They’re charged in the death of 18-year-old Marshall Wayne Turpin. He died in wreck on July 14 on East Wolf Creek Road in Rabun County.
The accident was caused when a vehicle occupied by the Smith brothers intentionally struck a vehicle occupied by Turpin, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Jesse Smith was arrested at the Rabun County Jail where he was being held on unrelated charges. He’s charged with one count of felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault, and one count of making false statements.
James Smith was taken into custody by the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office and charged with one count of felony murder and four counts of aggravated assault.
The arrests followed a six month-long investigation by the GBI, Georgia State Patrol, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, and Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
The brothers are currently being held at the Rabun County jail awaiting court proceedings.
Officials say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
