Habersham County has recorded its third confirmed rabies case this year.
The exposure occurred on Holley Street in the Demorest City Limits on October 30th in the early afternoon, according to Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Hawkins.
She says three canines, all Pit Bull Mixes, which were housed together were exposed to the raccoon. The homeowner killed it. Animal Control Officer Todd Roper responded to the incident and retrieved the dead raccoon. It was submitted to the Health Department for testing.
On Nov. 1, HCACC was notified the raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus.
“At this time the dogs are in a forty five day quarantine. All three canines had a vaccine history, but were not current,” a press release from Hawkins states.
HCACC continues to urge Habersham residents to ensure that their pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations.
