A small crowd gathered in the gazebo in downtown Clarkesville Thursday to commemorate the one year anniversary of the fire that swept through the historic downtown district on March 5, 2014.

Mayor Terry Green opened the brief but fitting tribute. He said the purpose was to reflect and move forward.

“A lot happened that night and a lot has happened since then and a lot more is going to happen in the next twelve months,” Green told those gathered. He added, “…a lot of our city employees, our public servants, worked very hard that night and in the months afterwards and this is partly to help thank them for that.”

Glenda Smith takes a moment to remember the event that took place one year ago from today. Clarkesville was lucky to not have any citizens injured.
City Clerk Glenda Smith was among those who attended Thursday’s commemoration.

City Manager Barbara Kesler thanked the firefighters who responded to the call on March 5, 2014. She also thanked the city support staff who helped during the fire that night. “I think it’s important to remember where we came from but then I also think it’s important to note how much this community has pulled together to recover from this event,” Kesler said. “We will just to continue to move forward from here. and are very thankful that no one was hurt that night and that we have pulled together as a community to come back from this.”
