Next 72 hours critical
This region of Italy is situated 106 miles northeast of Rome and is known for its olive plantations and vineyards. Much of this region is very historic, leaving heavy rubble on the old, narrow streets of the towns hit by the quake. This is a particularly high time for vacationers from all over the world to be in the area.
Rescuers say the next 72 hours are critical as they search for survivors beneath the rubble.
