Power crews worked through the day Saturday to restore electricity to thousands that were left in the dark by an early morning storm. The storm system swept through around 7:30 a.m. Saturday. It toppled trees and power poles, leaving people in Habersham and White counties without electricity for several hours.

Most of the power outages were in White County where the storm caused extensive wind damage along Duncan Bridge Road. Residents in the Fairview area of Habersham County also reported damage.

The storm knocked out power to over 4,500 Habersham EMC customers. Crews faced significant challenges in repairing the lines. Debris and trees blocked the roadways. The storm damaged transmission lines and broke nine power poles, according to HEMC spokesperson Nicole Dover.

HEMC called in crews from Blue Ridge Mountain EMC, Hart EMC and Jackson EMC to assist with restoration efforts.

According to HEMC’s online outage map, only one outage remained in the affected area as of early Sunday,
