Power restored in Cornelia after excavator hits utility pole

Power has been restored to most customers in the Cornelia area as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. According to findenergy.com, the height of the outage, it affected 2,188 customers in the Cornelia area.

As of 4:57 p.m., only five customers were without power in Cornelia according to the Georgia Power outage map.

Georgia Power PR & Communications Specialist for Media Relations Matthew Kent responded to Now Habersham’s request for information about the outage. “The outage was caused by a citizen in an excavator that hit a pole,” Kent said. “The outage took about an hour to restore customers.” He reported that no one was injured in the incident.

A widespread power outage affected the Cornelia area, leaving approximately 1,500 Georgia Power customers without electricity.

A Georgia Power text alert sent Tuesday afternoon notified customers of the outage and estimated that service should be restored by 4:15 p.m. The outage map indicated that the affected area includes all of Cornelia and parts of the surrounding community.
