Police investigate armed robbery in Mt. Airy

Local authorities are asking for the public’s help as they try to track down an armed robbery suspect.

On March 17, at approximately 10:58 p.m. the Mt. Airy Police Department and Habersham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an armed robbery at Lake Russell Convenience Store at 1321 Dick’s Hill Parkway.

Upon their arrival, an interview with the cashier along with video surveillance, revealed that a male with his face covered, wearing a black hoodie jacket and gloves, produced a black handgun and forced the clerk to reveal the location of an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect then took the money and fled the scene on foot, police say.

A tracking canine from Lee Arrendale State Prison was called-in to assist in locating the suspect but was unable to find him.

“The investigation is still on-going and additional evidence is being collected,” says Mt. Airy Police Chief Tim Jarrell.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the robbery or suspect to please contact either the Mt. Airy Police Department at 706-389-4732 or the Habersham County Criminal Investigative Division at 706 839-0500. You may remain anonymous.

“We are asking for any motorist who was in the area between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. to rethink their surroundings and if there is anything, they believe may be helpful to please contact us,” Chief Jarrell says. He adds, investigators are not releasing any images from the video surveillance footage at the present time.
