Police detain man who held gun to his head in public parking lot

A tense brief standoff ended peacefully this afternoon in Oakwood when police apprehended a man who had pointed a gun to his head.

The man was wanted on a warrant for child molestation.

Acting on information the suspect may be in the vicinity of Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood, Hall County Warrants Unit Deputies began looking in the area along with Oakwood Police. Around 12:30 p.m., Oakwood Police and a Hall County deputy attempted to stop the suspect’s pickup truck in the 3400 block of Mundy Mill Road

The suspect drove to the parking lot of an old barbecue restaurant and “stepped out of his truck with a handgun pointed to his head,” according to Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Derreck Booth.

“Police and Warrant Unit Deputies who had arrived secured the location and spoke with the man. After a short period of time, he surrendered without incident,” Booth says.

“The law enforcement family is just that, a family,” Sheriff Gerald Couch says. “I’m grateful for the Oakwood Police Department working together with our Deputies to diffuse this situation with no injury to the public, officers or suspect.”

The suspect was transported to the Hall County Jail to begin the booking process. Authorities have not released his name or any other information about the charges against him.
