Police chase in Alto lands driver in jail

A Maysville man who led officers on a police chase Friday in Alto remains in jail this morning. Robert Jeffery White, 47, was arrested around 11:23 p.m. April 9 after fleeing from a traffic stop, Alto Police Chief Josh Ivey says.

According to Ivey, Alto Police Cpl. Michael Tanksley attempted to stop a 1993 Ford Explorer for a tag violation. The driver of the Explorer, later identified as White, fled and a pursuit started.

“Tanksley performed a PIT maneuver in the area of Payne Norton Road where the driver was taken into custody after attempting to flee on foot,” says Ivey.

Officers charged White with multiple counts including DUI refusal, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, no insurance, failure to maintain lane, attempting to conceal the identity of the vehicle, possession of drug-related objects, failure to stop for a stop sign,
obstruction of a police officer, and driving on a suspended license.

Chief Ivey says White is also wanted out of Augusta on a probation violation. A judge set his bond at $14,310, online jail records show.
