Piedmont’s Dan McNeely accepts head coaching position at Maine Maritime

After helping guide the Piedmont College men’s basketball team as an assistant coach for the past two seasons, Dan McNeely has been formally announced as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach for Maine Maritime Academy, a NCAA Division III member located in Castine, Maine.
“I am tremendously excited to welcome Dan into the Maine Maritime Academy family. Our committee had a daunting task in wading through a deep and talented pool of applicants, and in the end, Coach McNeely proved to be a perfect fit,” said Director of Athletics for Maine Maritime Academy Steve Peed. “He is going to be an outstanding mentor for our athletes, teammate to our coaches, representative of what we embody as a department on this campus, and contributor to our small, coastal village.”

“I would like to thank Coach Greg Neeley for giving me the opportunity to work with the Men’s Basketball program at Piedmont College for the past two seasons,” said Dan McNeely. “Coach Neeley took a chance on me two years ago as an assistant coach, and I will be forever grateful to him for that. He is a great coach, leader, and friend, and I am sure the men’s basketball program will be very successful in the future.”

Over McNeely’s two seasons with the men’s basketball team here at Piedmont, the Lions posted the two highest win totals since the 2009-2010 season including going 15-11 in 2015-16. During his time in Demorest, Piedmont saw three student athletes earn all-conference honors in TRAE GAINES, JUSTIN VALLEJO and CHASE ENGLAND. Gaines and England also were named Most Outstanding Male Senior Student Athlete this season, sharing the honor, as voted on by coaches within the Piedmont athletic department.

“I would also like to thank the student-athletes that I have been blessed to coach over the past two seasons, ” said McNeely of his time in Demorest. “Piedmont College attracts high character student-athletes, and I am grateful to have helped coach and influence the lives of some great young men in the basketball program. Finally, I would like to thank Coach Peeples and the entire Athletic Department at Piedmont for their friendship and support. I have truly enjoyed my time at Piedmont and the relationships formed over the past two years.”

“We are very excited for Dan and his family. It’s bittersweet to lose someone who has been such a great ambassador for our program but I have no doubt that he will be great as a head coach,” said Head Men’s Basketball Coach Greg Neeley. “I am grateful for all Dan has done for our program the past two seasons. Maine Maritime is getting a terrific coach and even better person.”

McNeely earned his Bachelor of Science in Management from Wittenberg University in May of 2010 while also minoring in Russian Area Studies.  In June 2012, McNeely completed his Master of Science in Health, Exercise, and Sport Science with a concentration in Sport Management at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
