The Piedmont volleyball team was selected sixth overall in the Collegiate Conference of the South preseason coaches poll released Tuesday.
The preseason favorites are the Covenant Scots, the reigning CCS Champions from a season ago. The Scots totaled 54 points in the poll, while Huntingdon and Maryville tied at second with 47 points.
Berea claimed the fourth spot with 40 points, while Belhaven took fifth with 31. Piedmont ranked sixth with 27 points, followed by LaGrange (7th – 19 points), Wesleyan (8th – 14 points) and Agnes Scott (9th – 9 points).
In 2022, Piedmont totaled six conference victories with five of those coming in straight sets.
Leading a strong group of returners for the Lady Lions is senior libero Taylor Herrmann, who led the NCAA with 6.74 digs per set a season ago. The Lady Lions also return their top setter from last year in Brooklyn Gunn, who totaled 411 assists. Juniors Jenna Ash and Jessica Sconyers are also back after placing No. 1 and No. 2 on the team in kills last season, while the top two in blocks from 2022 return as well in Sconyers and junior Jia Weathersby.
Piedmont begins the 2023 season at Averett in tournament action with the season opener against the host Averett Cougars on Friday, September 1, at 4 p.m.
