In his third season at the helm of the Lion and Lady Lion programs, Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Jeff Jenkins has announced the 2016-17 schedule for the track & field programs with the indoor season beginning on Friday.
The schedule features four indoor meets and six outdoor competitions with eight total Division III meets on the schedule.
The men’s and women’s teams will be traveling together to the same meets and start the season on Friday, December 2 as they travel to Birmingham for the first of two indoor meets at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Piedmont will compete in the BSC Indoor Icebreaker hosted by Birmingham-Southern College to open the season before the Christmas break.
The Birmingham Crossplex is a world-class facility with an indoor 200 meter hydraulically banked track designed by Mondo as only one of six in the United States and one of eight in the world. Mondo has designed the tracks for the last ten Olympic Games and is the global leader in the sports flooring market.
Piedmont will return to action in the new year for the second indoor meet of the season traveling to Clemson, South Carolina for the Clemson Invitational on January 14. Clemson’s indoor track and field complex opened in December of 2003 and has been the site of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships twice in both 2004 and 2007.
The Lions and Lady Lions will return to Birmingham for the Emory CrossPlex Invitational on January 22 marking the second time in three years that Piedmont has competed at the event. This is the first of three total events Piedmont will compete in hosted by Emory with the remaining two both coming in the outdoor season.
Piedmont will head to the Tiger Indoor Invitational for the third straight season on February 11 in the final indoor competition of the spring. The Lions had a pair of top-five finishes in the meet a year ago as KYLE RAY was third overall in the pole vault and the men’s distance medley relay was third. REESE BOWLES also posted a top-five finish coming in fourth in the women’s 1-mile.
The outdoor opener comes in the peach state as Piedmont travels to Berry College for the Berry Victor Icebreaker Duals on March 4. This is the second straight season Piedmont has opened the outdoor schedule at this meet at Clark Track and Dickey Field at Valhalla Stadium on the campus of Berry. Piedmont saw 12 school records fall at this event last season.
Next up is the spring break trip as the Piedmont teams will head south to Savannah, Georgia competing in the Tiger Orange and Blue Invitational at Savannah State on March 11. This will be the only non-Division III hosted event of the outdoor schedule in 2017.
The Emory Invitational on March 17 is one of four meets in the outdoor season that is a repeat trip from last season. Piedmont will compete at Emory two weekends in a row taking part in the Emory Classic just a week later on March 24 at the George W. Woodruff Physical Education Center.
The Lions will return to Berry for the Berry Field Day Invitational on April 8 in Rome, Georgia and will wrap up the regular season on April 14 at the Mountain Laurel Invitational. Sewanee will host the Mountain Laurel Invitational marking the second trip to Tennessee with this competition at Coughlan Track.
