Local fans of author Barbara Brown Taylor are invited to attend an April 11 reception and book signing at the Piedmont College Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art to celebrate her latest work, Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others, which became a New York Times bestseller in March.
The work, Taylor’s fourteenth, was released by HarperOne last month and explores her time as a religion professor at Piedmont from 1998 to 2017. The book recounts her experiences in the classroom and as a mentor and guide to students as they collectively explored their own faith while taking field trips to churches, monasteries, temples, and mosques.
The free event will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and will include a reading by Taylor, who will also answer questions. The museum is located at 567 Georgia Street in Demorest. Copies of Holy Envy will be available for sale.
Taylor, who lives in Habersham County, is a best-selling author, teacher, and Episcopal priest. Her first memoir, Leaving Church, won an Author of the Year award from the Georgia Writers Association in 2006. Her next two books, An Altar in the World (2010) and Learning to Walk in the Dark (2015), earned places on the New York Times bestseller list.
In addition to Piedmont, she has served on the faculties of Columbia Theological Seminary, Candler School of Theology at Emory University, McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University, and the Certificate in Theological Studies program at Arrendale State Prison for Women in Alto, Georgia.
In 2014, TIME included her on its annual list of Most Influential People; in 2015 she was named Georgia Woman of the Year; in 2016 she received the President’s Medal at the Chautauqua Institution in New York.
