DEMOREST, GA- The students of Piedmont College will host a health fair on Tuesday, March 24 and Wednesday, March 25 from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. The health fair will be held on the campus of Piedmont College in the Lane Student Center. It is open to the entire community of Habersham County.
There will also be a blood drive on Tuesday, March 24 from 12:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. in the student center, which is hosted by the American Red Cross. While there, people can stop by the vendor booths at the health fair to have their blood pressure checked. Some of the other things to be offered are weight checks and you can get waist measurements and your BMI checked. Visitors can also receive information from clinics, specialty offices, non-profit organizations and other resources available within the community.
Event Coordinator Jessie Owensby said, “We have vendors from all over the county who serve all different types of people with a range of healthcare needs. I am so excited to see everyone come out and hopefully take away some good information.”
Owensby is a senior mass communications major at Piedmont who is coordinating this event in conjunction with a health promotions class. She has prior experience in healthcare, and she is passionate about helping people, as well as non-profit work. The instructor for the class, Denyse Vincent, said, “We have had very productive meetings and plans are progressing along nicely. We look forward to providing information and services that are available on campus and in the community.”
“I am so grateful for Ms. Denyse and her class helping with the health fair. With their assistance, we were able to make it much bigger, and much more helpful to the community than I had originally planned, so I am happy that together, we are able to bring health awareness to the students and residents of Habersham County,” said Owensby.
Those who donate blood to the American Red Cross will receive a T-shirt while supplies last. Attendees who stop by all the booths at the health fair will be entered to win a prize. A $50 gift card will be given out at the end of each day of the health fair.
Kaitlin Norman, a senior biology major and health promotions student said, “We thought that it would be nice to offer an incentive encouraging people to come because we believe that health and wellness is a very important topic. So, we found a way to make it happen, and we are really glad that we are able to give a prize to two lucky people who come to the health fair.”
Owensby plans to host approximately ten vendors, and she hopes to have close to 500 people attend the health fair. For more information regarding the health fair, contact the event coordinator, Jessie Owensby, at [email protected].
